Sony Hard Drive Recovered

WooHoo! I picked up my Sony NW-HD1 today and it works like a charm. The drive was physically damaged. The data was unrecoverable. Lucky for me I owned the music that was on my Sony Walkman.

Interestingly the NW-HD1 booted up and formated the drive from firmware. I had updated firmware installed previously and it was still there even with the new drive.

It was a drag that the data could not be recovered but not the end of the world. I just needed to update the device to get the music back on the device.

So I finally got around to shipping my Sony NW-HD1 to Recovery Force to recover the data from the hard drive on my MP3 player. You can see from this picture that the unit would power up. The screen you see in this image is as far as the NW-HD1 would go. No amount of cajoling could get the drive to load any further.

I picked up my Sony NW HD-1 a couple of years ago. About 18 months after purchasing the Walkman I dropped it. It didn’t fall far but it fell far enough to mess up the hard drive. I can no longer get the unit to boot. I asked the folks at Sony what it would cost to repair the unit and they said it didn’t make sense as the cost of a new one was less than what the repair would be.

I heard of a company called Recovery Force that does hard drive recovery for all types of drives including Walkmans, iPods and camera cards.

I decided to keep a little journal of what happens when I send my NW HD-1 in for a hard drive repair.
